Why pick litter? Celbridge Tidy Towns
Why pick litter? Celbridge Tidy Towns
I notice that the first listed objective of Celbridge Tidy Towns is to increase pride and morale in the community. This is being done in many different ways by lots of varied sporting and cultural groups who by the nature of their activities give pride and a sense of place to people in this community.
Littered streets and roads give a dreadful impression to any outside observer. It says 'We don't care' about our neighbourhood. On the other hand clean streets, neat shop fronts, appropriate signage and a lack of graffiti shows a community with pride in itself. This is what motivates people who try to keep our town litter free. There
are approximately 65 volunteers in Celbridge Tidy Towns and more are always welcome.By showing a presence on the streets we hope our efforts don't go unnoticed and others will follow our good example, and in their own way, strive to keep Celbridge a nice place to visit and live in
I volunteered to clean the Ardclough Rd.from the bridge to Chelmsford. I chose to do so on Sunday mornings as the traffic was lighter then on this most dangerous of roads.
Luckily I was joined by my neighbour, Alan Stewart, and come hail or shine we clean the road on a weekly basis or whenever we notice a particular need.We also take part in general cleanups of major blackspots when this becomes necessary. The town is cleaned every Sunday morning from the Priory carpark to Castletown gates. Other streets and roads are cleaned by various members in their own time and flowerbeds and baskets are mantained throughout the season.
Why do we pick up litter?
We do so because we like our town and because we value being members of a community that cares. We also enjoy the fun and friendship which all such activities bring as their own reward.
